Are you among the majority who love sipping soft drinks quite too often? Are you also among the people who keep forgetting things too often? Blame it all on soft drinks and diet cokes are even worse.
Research and new study has found harsh truth behind cokes and soft drinks, if you keep drinking sugary beverages, it leads to poorer memory and diet soda may increase the risk of heart stroke and dementia. Sugary drinks and diet soda are known to accelerate brain aging, and bad memory. People who drink sugary beverages too much suffer from poorer memory, brain volume decreases and hippocampus gets reduced gradually, hippocampus is the part of brain known for learning and memory.
It will cause Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
People consuming diet soda and cokes are more prone to get dementia and heart stroke more than those who don’t drink. Scientist have also put forth hypotheses about artificial sweetener may cause gut bacteria to altering the brain’s perception of sweet but they need to understand the underlying mechanisms said Boston University’s Matthew Pase, who is the lead author two studies.
It is said that there is not much upsides for sugary drinks and mixing artificial sweetener seems of no use either-Seshadri, senior author on both papers.
Cardiovascular, obesity, heart disease and type -2 diabetes, are some known problems of using excess sugar. But very little is known how sugar affects human brain. It is difficult to keep tab on the sugar intake through food we eat, so sugary beverages have been taken as the proxy.
From about 4000 people who enrolled themselves in the Framingham Heart Study’s Offspring and Third Generation Cohorts for the study first published about Alzheimer’s and Dementia, researchers further examined using MRI and cognitive testing results. The study was on those people who took more than two soft/diet drinks in a day, or more than three per week of soda alone.
Those were high on soft drinks, diet cokes and sodas had the early symptoms of brain aging, smaller brain volume, poorer episodic memory and shrunken hippocampus, which leads to Alzheimer’s disease.
It is also found that higher intake of diet soda or at least one per day leads to smaller volume of brain. In the second study researchers looked for whether people suffered stroke or diagnosed with dementia due to Alzheimer’s.
And they concluded that those who drank one diet soda a day were three times more likely to get stroke and dementia.
